Rare! Pair of Officer's Insignia of the "M" Battalions
The "M" Battalions (where the "M" referred to Benito Mussolini) were the elite units of the Italian Voluntary Militia for National Security during World War II. They were employed primarily in the Russian campaign, the Italian campaign in Greece, and the planned invasion of Malta. Members of the "M" Battalions wore standard MVSN uniforms, with the only difference being their black insignia. The silver fasces used by MVSN units, in place of the Royal Army stars, was replaced by an interwoven fasces with a red enameled capital letter "M," reproducing Mussolini's handwriting.
The pennants of the various battalions also featured the same symbolism: they were designed in the shape of a swallowtail and featured the same red "M" embroidered with the fasces, the words "Follow me" (expressing loyalty to the Fatherland and to Fascism) in the same handwriting as the "M" and the unit number.
