The Battle of Pichincha, fought on May 24, 1822, was the battle that freed Ecuador from Spanish rule. Antonio José de Sucre, one of Simón Bolívar's best generals, and his army managed to defeat Madrid's royalist troops, who were unable to exploit their advantageous position. The royalists lost their battle flags and a third of their men. The Battle of Pichincha was part of the Ecuadorian War of Independence and the Spanish American Wars of Independence.
