It originates from the "Piedmont" Brigade established on 25 October 1831 which has
the 1st and 2nd Rgt under its staff. Infantry and disbanded on 15 October 1871.
In execution of the law of 11 March 1926 on the organization of the army, which
provides for the establishment of brigades on three regiments, assumes the name of
XXIX Infantry Brigade and also frames the 75th Rgt. Naples; the brigade and the
24th Rgt. Artillery become part of the 29th Territorial Military Division of Messina.
This unit, then, in 1934 takes the name of Peloritana. On February 28, 1935 the division
is mobilized as Peloritana Infantry Division (29a) and is sent to Somalia; at the same
time, and for the entire period of stay in the colony of the same, from March 1935 to
December 1936, the Peloritana II Territorial Military Division (129a) was established,
to which the 146th Rgt. Infantry, the 222nd Rgt. and the 224th Rgt. Infantry - framed
by the Peloritana II Infantry Brigade (CXXIX) also newly constituted - and the
52nd Rgt. Artillery. On April 15, 1939, the Peloritana is organically transformed,
framing the 3rd Rgt. Infantry, the 4th Rgt. Infantry and the 24th Rgt. Artillery and
assumes the name of Piedmont Infantry Division (29a) Campaign of Ethiopia 1935 - The Peloritana Division is sent to Somalia on March 5th. Once the conflict began,
it was initially deployed to defend the coastal garrisons of Mogadishu, Chisimaio and Merca
and, in December, it moved towards the borders with Kenya. 1936 - In March the units of
the Peloritana division take part in defensive operations against troops operating from
the Harrar, straddling the Uebi Scebeli river. In April, in the course of the final offensive,
the Division is employed as a second rank G.U. Completed the war operations, she remains
in the occupied territory of the Harrar and conducts round-up operations during which she
is forced to sustain real fighting against armed bands operating in the areas of Giggiga,
Abdulla, Cambulcià, Amhara, Dire Daua.
