The unit was created on December 24, 1828, by decree of the King of Sardinia Carlo Felice, 
with the original name of Dragoni di Piemonte. From 1 January 1832 it takes the name of
Novara Cavalleria with which it participates in the First War of Independence, on 9 April 1848
it has its baptism of fire by participating in the occupation of the Monzambano bridge while
in the Battle of Santa Lucia the regimental banner earns its first Bronze Medal for military valor
and was the first cavalry regiment to receive a banner decoration for the Risorgimento campaigns.
On June 14 of the same year the unit, subjected to an attack by a group of Uhlans, victoriously
charged the attackers, turning them on the run. The Novara had been led to the attack by
his colonel Ferdinando Maffei di Boglio, who for his behavior on the occasion, obtained the
Gold Medal for military valor, the first awarded to a member of the department
