Established by Massimo D'Azeglio in 1859 with volunteers from Veneto and Romagna who flocked
to Piedmont, in a first nucleus that took the name of Vittorio Emanuele Cavalleria Regiment,
in 1860 it was incorporated into the Royal Army with the name of Vittorio Emanuele Lancers. In 1871 he assumed that of the 10th Cavalry Regiment (Vittorio Emanuele), continuing to be
armed with a spear. This name was changed in 1876 to that of Cavalry Regiment Vittorio Emanuele (10th),
in 1897 to that of Lancieri Vittorio Emanuele, in 1900 to that of Lancieri Vittorio Emanuele II (10th)
and finally in 1920 to that of Cavalleggeri Vittorio Emanuele. . He participated in the campaigns of 1860 and 1866; in those 1887-88, 1895-96 and 1911-12 he sent
complements to the mobilized departments. During the great war (1915-18) he initially fought in Cervignano. He distinguished himself during
the retreat of the army to the Piave, protecting retreating columns and engaging in fighting in
S. Vito di Fagagna, in Meduna and on the Livenza. In the battle of the Piave (June 1918) he actively participated, on foot and on horseback, near
Monastier di Treviso and in S. Pietro Novello. During the final offensive, he boldly pursued the enemy over the Piave to Palmanova and Cervignano. For his demeanor he deserved the citation in the bulletin of war n. 1128 of the Supreme Command and
the bronze medal for Military Valor. Transformed from "horse" to "chariots", in 1943 it was located north of Rome, under the "Ariete"
Cavalry Division (RECo. Montebello, Cavalleggeri di Lucca), and took part in the resistance against
the Germans for defense From Rome. It should be noted the serg. major Udino Bombieri who, having
fallen on his chariot in combat, will be decorated with Med. Now at V.M .. The Regiment will dissolve on September 16 as part of the surrender of the forces defending Rome.
