The Cavalleggeri Guide Regiment (19th) is a unit of the cavalry weapon of the Italian Army.
The regiment belongs to the "line cavalry" specialty which, since 1999 alongside the "tank crew"
specialty, includes the traditional regiments of the weapon. From the historical point of view,
the "Guide" Regiment represents the first point of contact of the ancient line cavalry with
the tank crew specialty since it was the Guides, through the Tank Regiment, who were the first
to be equipped in 1933-34 with vehicles mechanical. On April 7, 1859, a Squadron of Guides on
horseback was formed consisting of 7 officers and 150 men, taken from the Squadrons of the various
existing Horse Regiments and with Captain Ercole Rizzardi in command, with the task of ensuring
the relay service between the districts generals and divisions. In addition to the armament, saber
and pistol, the Guides were therefore equipped with sabretache, a characteristic paper bag in which
to store the documents to be delivered, jokingly nicknamed "marmot". In February 1860 the Guides Regiment
was formed, which then passed to the Cavalry specialty and which, unique among all the cavalry units,
did not assume a denomination inherent to a city or a province of the Kingdom, but an appellation
connected with its particular function .
