Beautiful bear hat frieze for officer of the 23rd Cavalleggeri "ALESSANDRIA" pre-1933 rgt
The "Cavalleggeri di Alessandria" originate from the ancient regiment of the same name
established with R.D. on January 3, 1850, based on 4 squadrons and a depot. The 1st and
2nd squadrons are made up of the 5th and 6th of the «Cavalleggeri di Novara», the 3rd and
4th are made up of the 5th and 6th of the «Cavalleggeri di Aosta». The deposit squadron
was the 6th of «Piemonte Reale».
After the First World War, "Alessandria" moved from Lucca to Florence: following the
reduction of the Cavalry Army, in February 1920, it incorporated elements of the dissolved
"Cavalleggeri Regiment of Treviso", of which it also guards the Standard. The R.D. 451
of 20 April, fixes the regimental name "Cavalleggeri di Alessandria".
In 1928, the regiment was part of the III Superior Cavalry Command. On 1 September 1930 the
regiment was transferred from the garrison to Palmanova.
For the war in Spain (1937-39) the regiment provided numerous volunteers for the establishment
of Italian legionary units.
