The origins of the division date back to 1831, to the Sardinian Army Guards Brigade.
With the order of 11 March 1926, which introduced the ternary brigades, the
"Grenadiers of Sardinia" Brigade was formed, out of three regiments of grenadiers,
which together with the 13th Artillery Regiment formed the 21st Territorial Division
of Rome. On 8 February 1934 this became the 21st Infantry Division "Granatieri di Sardegna".
In 1939 the division loses the 3rd Regiment "Granatieri di Sardegna", while the
55th Legion CC.NN. assault.
In execution of the law of 11 March 1926 on the organization of the Royal Army,
which provided for the establishment of the Brigades on three regiments, the
3rd "Grenadiers" Regiment was also included in the brigade, reconstituted on 1 December 1926,
formed with the third battalions of the pre-existing regiments, and the brigade took the name
of XXI Infantry Brigade.
In 1935 the 1st Battalion of the 3rd Regiment took part in the Ethiopian War.
In the autumn of 1939, when the infantry divisions were formed on two infantry regiments,
the 1st and 2nd Regiment "Granatieri di Sardegna" were assigned, together with the
13th Field Artillery Regiment, to the 21st Infantry Division "Granatieri di Sardegna" ,
while the 3rd Regiment "Grenadiers Guards" was detached from it, remaining stationed
in Albania in whose invasion it had taken part and was then used for
